Speed
Definition 1: The distance an object travels in a certain period of time without regard to direction.
Definition 2: The overall rate at which an object moves; calculated by dividing the total distance and object travels by the total time.
Equation: Speed = Distance/Time
Time = Distance/Speed
Distance = Speed x Time
Math Solution 1: Suppose a cyclist travels 50 km during the first 2 hours. Then the cyclist travels 6 km during the next hour. What is the average speed of the cyclist?
Answer: Average Speed = Distance/Time, so 56m/3hr = 18.6km/hr
Math Solution 2: A football field is about 150 m long. If it takes a person 35 seconds to run its length, how fast were they running?
Answer: Speed = Distance/Time, so 150m/35s = 4.28m/s
